I have seen many people do the Atkins diet. The one thing I have found in common with every individual is that they were looking for a quick solution to their weight loss problem. The individuals who decided to go on a low or no carb diet could not maintain that diet for very long. After the first week everything seems hunky dory. They may something like “I really don’t miss the carbs, I really like meat and I can do this.” After about the third week you will hear something like “I’m tired of salad” or I’ve heard “It is really difficult to just eat protein.” And after about month and half they have lost some weight and maybe even significantly perhaps 20 pound or more. They give themselves a pat on the back and decide they tortured themselves enough and they stop the diet. In a few months they are back to square one, right! Carbs are very important for your body to have. Carbohydrates provide your body and muscles with a necessary energy source. Your brain functions primarily on carbohydrates. If you eliminate carbs from your diet you will become tired more quickly. You will barely have enough energy to do your daily chores much less make it to the gym to workout.

So what to do?

“Everything in moderation” this is a key phrase I want you to remember. Carbs, protein, fat, and even alcohol are OK in moderation. You need to have carbohydrates in your diet.

So what carbs should you eat?

I think you probably know already but are afraid to admit it! Potatoes, rice, whole wheat or whole grain breads are very good for you as they provide more complex carbohydrates that your body will digest over time, kind of like a time release of carbohydrates giving you more stable blood sugar levels. This will allow your body to burn most of the sugars as they are being provided to the body. But this is done in moderation. You CAN have too much of good thing

Try to avoid sugars, You Know What I’m Talking About! Candy the number one culprit, regular soda drinks is probably number 2. These items will give your body a rapid spike of blood sugar levels. The body can not use all of these carbs at one time unless you are performing a strenuous activity. So your body will use what it can and store the rest as FAT.

If you need to munch on something sweet grab some fruit, I personally love grapes. They keep me away from the candy. Switch to diet soda, Coke Zero is really good and I can’t tell the difference between that and regular Coke. Next, keep the sweets out of your house. If you make a conscious effort not to buy these bad items you will have taken out the temptation at home to grab some out of habit or boredom.

During our voyage through life, we are bombarded with stereotypical images of health, fitness, and beauty by society and media. It is up to us to interpret and react how we see appropriate. Everyone’s body possesses fat. There is safe fat and excess fat. People store excess fat on their bodies because they are eating the wrong types of fat…not the good ones.

As human beings, it is important to store a certain amount of fat droplets in our bodies. This is mandatory for preserving the functions of cells. In addition, there are great many types of fats that hold great powers to fight disease. The key to dealing with fats is to control both the amount of fat you eat and the kind of fat you eat. So, let’s talk about some good fat to eat, OK?

First off, we need to discuss the composition of fat, briefly, of course.

A major building block of fat is fatty acids, which are composed of chains of carbon atoms. The length of these chains predicts how your body uses the fat. Shorter chains of fatty acids are absorbed quicker than longer chains of fatty acids are absorbed, which tend to be stored as fat.

Attached to these chains of fatty acids (or carbon atoms) you will find hydrogen atoms. The more of these, the more saturated the fat is. If the chain is missing some hydrogen atoms, the fatty acid is unsaturated. One missing point of hydrogen atoms is referred to a monosaturated fat (found in olives, cashews, and salmon). When there are two or more missing points the fat is called polysaturated. This fat is found in vegetable oils and fish. EFA or Essential Fatty Acid is present in polysaturated fat and is very important for normal cell growth and development.

Now, let’s talk more about the good fat to eat.

EFA’s are not produced by the human body. Hence, EFA’s are solely provided by your diet. Essential Fatty Acids are extremely beneficial to our bodies. It even has the ability to treat many health conditions.

Being that the fats we eat are altered by chemical means, they have been striped of their EFA’s. They are now synthetic fats such as trans-fatty fats found in fast foods, stick margarine and packaged snacks, i.e. cookies.

Lastly, EFA’s are classified into 2 omega fats more commonly known as omega 3 and omega 6. These fats are both essential and must be included in your diet.

Omega 3 fatty acid is known for preventing and/or treating heart disease, arthritis, cancer, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Omega 3 fats are present in the following foods: Wheat germ oil, walnuts, salmon, sardines, tuna and other cold water fish. Also, flax seeds, purslane, and perilla oils are all high in omega 3 fats.

Omega 6 fatty acids regulate reproduction and metabolism, and are good for both skin and hair and important for normal growth. Foods rich in omega 6 fats include but not limited to almonds, peanut butter, Brazil nuts, soybean oil, cotton seed oil, corn oil, sunflower seeds and walnuts.

Now that we have touched on some very basic facts about fat, hopefully we now are more comfortable with the consumption of fats. Now let’s go out there and find some good fat to eat.

There basically four major methods of measuring body fat. They include Navy Method, Home Body Fat Scales, Skinfold Calipers, and Hydrostatic Weighing. But we will look into three that are more commonly used.

Home Body Fat Scales-This device measures body fat by the use of Biometrical Impedance method. A very small electrical current, that is not enough to harm the body is passed through your body and the opposing current or is measured. When this result is compared to the weight, the percentage of body fat can then be determined.

This test has a margin of error, because the impedance in the body is altered by other factors that also generate some currents apart from body fat. Example is the electrical waves in the heart, the skeletal muscles etc, and water in your body, your skin temperature and physical exercise. Archimedes principle reasons that the amount of water displaced when an object in partially or totally immersed in water is proportional to the weight of that object. In this case you are the object. Then a formula is used to calculate body fat based on your body density. The problem is finding hydrostatic weighing tank! I guess this is too sophisticated for most people. But it remains the most accurate.

You did not gain your excess weight overnight and you will not lose your weight overnight either. In truth we have a weight set point which is similar to a thermostat in as much as it tries to keep your weight constant.

If you over eat at a party, your weight may go up a little but soon will return back to its normal weight. But, slowly over the years of eating the wrong foods (junk foods, high glycemic index foods, foods with too much saturated fats like fatty red meats) increases your weight set point and your weight goes up.

So it will take some time (but not as long as for your weight gain) to lower your set point to the desired value. Note – for those in a hurry – if you reduce your caloric intake too low (below 1500 to 1200 depending on your current weight and activity level) your body will shift into the starvation mode and slow down your metabolism and stop your weight loss. In fact later your slower metabolic rate will increase your weight – hence the yo-yo syndrome.

The phases of a good weight management program:

* Phase one – rapid weight loss

In a good weight management program using both food control and exercise, at first your weight may go down rapidly as you lose water weight and eat more fiber and thus cleans your colon.

* Phase two – some weight gain

Next as you exercise chances are your weight will go up a tad as you replace fat with muscle. Don’t give up. Muscle weighs more than fat. I tell my weight reduction clients not to weigh themselves the first few weeks and look in the mirror and notice how they look so much better.

I still have a little to go but I’m very happy with the progress and will continue with the low GI diet. In fact soon I’ll need to buy tighter belts as today I reached the last hole, then as my waist size is now the same as forty years ago, but that’s a good problem to have.

So you see weight management program need not be difficult to impossible. You need to have reasonable expectations and goals, with room for plateauing, and eat plenty of good health giving foods with good proteins, fats and carbohydrates. A mostly plant based diet with lean meat (mostly fish, or skinned chicken) with plenty of water and fruits will keep you full while leting you to lose your weight safely and become more healthy.

The problem of obesity is so alarming that several millions of USD is being spent on researches on the best way people can avoid it with minimum effort. It is even more alarming when the number of children becoming obsessed is put into consideration.

The prevalence of obese children aged 6-to-11 years has more than doubled since the 1960s. Obesity prevalence in youths aged 12-17 has increased dramatically from 5% to 13% in boys and from 5% to 9% in girls between 1966-70 and 1988-91 in the USA. The problem is global and increasingly extends into the developing world; for example, in Thailand the prevalence of obesity in 5-to-12 year olds children rose from12.2% to 15-6% in just two years”.

The reason why this is so undesirable is because, obesity is the root cause of over 40 different illnesses and efforts to prevent it are not misplaced. Obesity can impact our health by increasing the risk of cardiovascular, musculoskeletal and digestive system diseases to name a few. The next few paragraphs look at some of the ways obesity negatively impacts on our health.

Blount’s disease- Obesity is a known cause of Blount’s Disease which usually involves the lower extremities deformity mainly due to over bearing of body weight especially in bones that are still undergoing growth. However, this is one of the very minor problems of obesity.

The cysts cause increase testosterone secretions which in many cases leads to hisuitism (increase hair growth in females- e.g. beards), worsening acne, and male-type baldness.

Diabetes- Obesity is the major cause of Type II or Non-insulin dependent Diabetes Mellitus also known as adult diabetes. It is common in people from 40 years of age. When there is excess body fat, insulin sensitivity of the cells is impaired and less glucose is taken up by the body cells. This causes glucose accumulation in the blood and consequently diabetes. Other problems of obesity are slipped capital femoral epiphyses, asthma, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, gallstones formation, fatty liver, depression with low self esteem. Appetite Suppression can be quite a difficult task for may people. First of all, you need to ask yourself whether it is healthy to suppress your appetite. Do this before during and after meals.

Another ? a liter after meal ensures that you stay feeled for long without thinking about food. This is the most cost effective method of suppressing your craving. If you do feel hungry just before the time to eat reach for a glass of water instead.

Eat a lot of Salad – Another way to suppressed appetite is by eating salad just before a meal. You may also eat salad if you feel hungry before it is time for your next meal. It has the ability to feel your stomach and prevents hunger due to the high fiber contents of salad.

Avoid high calorie diet when hungry – When you are really hungry you may want to stay off high calorie diet at that time because of the likelihood of eating more than you should.

Fruits should be regular feature in your diet – Reach out for apples, pineapples, carrots, guavas, oranges and grapes. Nothings keep you as satisfied as fruits. If you are a diabetic please consult your doctor on the type of fruits you should eat.

Never Skip Breakfast – Skipping breakfast makes us very hungry in the afternoon leading to excessive eating. So if you cultivate a habit of always eating in the morning, you will less likely eat too much later on in the day.
